Correct answer
Anticipate and use engine braking in a suitable gear when safe.
Anticipate slowing and progressively release the accelerator with a suitable gear engaged, using engine braking when appropriate. Many fuel-injected engines cut fuel delivery during overrun under certain conditions; this is not guaranteed for every engine or operating state. Do not maximise engine braking at any cost or use a gear so high that the engine labours. Use the brakes whenever needed to control and stop the vehicle safely. Revving before shutdown or manually switching off at every halt are not universal efficiency rules.
