Annex XI of the General Vehicle Regulations says this lighting is not mandatory when the meter’s figures or letters are self-illuminating. It differs from the exterior multiple-fare indicator and the vacant indicator. Lighting the fare display must not be confused with externally showing the tariff being applied.
