AMDifficulty 3/5

On a conventional road outside built-up areas, with one lane per direction, overtaking permitted and traffic not congested, you ride a moped behind another vehicle without intending to overtake. Outside a tunnel, what gap must you keep?

Correct answer

Enough to stop without collision and allow a safe overtake by the following vehicle.

A gap allowing you to stop without collision if the vehicle ahead brakes abruptly, and allowing a following driver to overtake safely, under Article 54. Adapt it to speed, grip and braking capability. The additional overtaking-gap duty does not apply in built-up areas, where overtaking is prohibited, with multiple lanes in the same direction or where congestion prevents overtaking. The specific 50-metre rule for heavy vehicles or combinations longer than 10 metres is not the general moped rule; conditions may require a larger gap.
