BDifficulty 2/5

Outside a built-up area, you overtake a cyclist in your car on a carriageway with one lane in each direction. In addition to using part or all of the adjacent or opposing lane as appropriate, what minimum lateral clearance must you keep?

Correct answer

1.50 metres

At least 1.5 metres, without endangering or obstructing oncoming users. With more than one lane in the same direction, a complete lane change would be compulsory. Outside a built-up area, before and throughout overtaking these users, reduce speed by at least 20 km/h below the road limit under current Article 85.4. The question does not indiscriminately extend this rule to all motorcycles.
