Correct answer
The safety distance appropriate to speed and conditions.
The safety distance needed to stop without collision if the vehicle ahead brakes sharply, accounting for speed, grip and braking under Article 54. Signalling an intention to overtake does not permit dangerously close following. Extra separation to allow another vehicle to overtake has its own conditions and exceptions; it neither replaces the basic safety distance nor imposes a fixed 50 m on every car. Tunnels have specific rules and are excluded here.
