C1Difficulty 3/5

An ordinary rigid lorry and a motor caravan arrive simultaneously at an unsigned narrowing and cannot pass each other. There are no instructions from officers or personnel and no gradient determining a different priority. Which must reverse?

Correct answer

The lorry I am driving.

The lorry. In the Article 62 order, motor caravans take precedence over lorries, tractor units and vans. Apply that order to a simultaneous encounter without signs or instructions determining a different priority. If one had entered first, signs or instructions were present, or a special gradient rule applied, those circumstances would have to be considered. The greater reversing-distance criterion applies to vehicles of the same type or unlisted cases.
