BDifficulty 3/5

Under article 122 in force from 1 October 2026, a pedestrian walks alone without wheeling a cycle or another vehicle. There is no usable pedestrian area or safety reason to use the right side. If a usable shoulder exists, which one must they use?

Correct answer

Use the left shoulder in the conditions described.

Use the left shoulder in the direction of walking, as far as possible from vehicle traffic. If none exists or it is unusable, use the carriageway under article 122. The right side is exceptionally allowed for safety reasons; certain cases, such as wheeling a cycle or a directed group, must also use the right. The current wording no longer permits either side indiscriminately simply because the location is built up.
