C1Difficulty 3/5

The manufacturer permits jump-starting a negative-earth vehicle using a source of the same nominal voltage and the specified connection points. What principle must be followed when connecting the auxiliary source?

Correct answer

In parallel, with the same nominal voltage, correct polarity and the manufacturer’s specified points and procedure.

Connect in parallel with the same nominal voltage and correct polarity: positive to the designated positive point and the negative return to the earth or connection point specified by the manufacturer. Follow the manual’s sequence, points and precautions; direct connection to the discharged battery’s negative terminal is not universally required. Never reverse polarity or use a different-voltage source, such as 24 V for a 12 V system. A 24 V system must not be confused with an individual 12 V battery that may form part of it. Seek assistance if compatibility or battery condition is uncertain.
