C1Difficulty 2/5

Under the axle-group definition in Annex IX of the General Vehicle Regulations, what is a tri-axle group?

Correct answer

A group of three axles forming part of a bogie.

It is a group of three axles forming part of a bogie. Section 1.21 does not define the group by requiring adjacent axle spacing of at most 1.30 m. Spacing does affect mass limits: the trailer and semi-trailer table distinguishes spacing up to 1.30 m from spacing above 1.30 m up to 1.40 m. Do not confuse these mass-limit intervals with the group definition.
