C1Difficulty 2/5

What is the bead of a tyre?

Correct answer

The area where the tyre joins the rim.

The bead is the part of the tyre that seats and secures it on the rim; it contains the rings that provide that attachment. It is neither the tread contacting the road nor the valve hole in the rim. Other tyre elements include the carcass, sidewalls, shoulders and tread.
