The carriageway
The carriageway is the part of the road intended for vehicle traffic and consists of a number of lanes. The shoulder is the adjoining strip intended for motor cars only in exceptional circumstances. Other users, such as mopeds in the circumstances of Article 36, may be required to use a suitable, sufficiently wide shoulder: it is incorrect to say no vehicle normally uses it.
