A1Difficulty 2/5

When carrying a passenger on a motorcycle, what should you bear in mind about braking?

Correct answer

More braking distance may be needed.

Combined mass and inertia increase, and more braking distance may be needed. Adapt speed, increase your safety margin and anticipate manoeuvres. Follow manufacturer guidance on load, tyre pressure and settings. Carrying a passenger does not itself mean the rider’s reaction time increases; distance also depends on speed, grip and braking technique.
