Place the vehicle on level ground, switch off the engine and observe the temperature and waiting time specified by the manufacturer before measuring. There is no universal requirement to check cold: some manuals specify warming the engine and allowing oil to drain back after switching it off. Do not remove the dipstick with the engine running.
