AMDifficulty 1/5

When overtaking a pedestrian on an interurban road, what lateral safety distance must you leave?

Correct answer

One and a half metres, as a minimum.

Leave at least 1.5 metres of lateral clearance. Under Article 85.4, effective from 1 October 2026, occupy part or all of the adjacent or opposing lane; if there is more than one lane in your direction, a complete lane change is required. Outside built-up areas, reduce speed to at least 20 km/h below the road limit before and throughout overtaking. Do not overtake if you endanger or hinder opposing traffic.
