Correct answer
Allow a following vehicle to overtake safely.
To allow a following vehicle to overtake safely. This additional gap does not by itself guarantee avoidance of a rear-end collision: maintain the stopping gap needed for speed, grip and braking, which may be greater. Article 54(3) exempts this additional gap in built-up areas, where overtaking is prohibited, with more than one lane in your direction or when saturation prevents overtaking. Its overtaking purpose must not be confused with a fixed braking distance.
