Tangential force
The tangential component, parallel to the instantaneous path: it can increase or decrease speed. The normal or centripetal component, directed towards the centre of curvature, changes the direction of motion. In physics, velocity includes magnitude and direction, so velocity can change around a bend while speed remains constant. Tangential force is not used only for braking.
