C1Difficulty 2/5

You drive a lorry straight ahead and notice that the following vehicle intends to overtake. As a general rule, what must you do?

Correct answer

Keep close to the right-hand edge of the carriageway to facilitate the manoeuvre.

Keep to the right edge without accelerating or obstructing the manoeuvre. Reduce speed if an initiated overtake creates danger. Also, when opposing traffic or road characteristics prevent easy and safe overtaking, slow down or move onto a practicable shoulder as soon as possible to let traffic pass. This does not mean always slowing in every circumstance or placing all responsibility on the overtaking driver.
