DGT theory exam without a driving school

Illustration of a young man studying alone at home with a laptop and an open notebook

Applying independently [por libre] means submitting your exam application to the DGT without a driving school doing it for you. Most people apply through a driving school, but you can also handle the application yourself. This guide sets out the documents and the ways to submit them.

We are not the DGT.

Who can apply and which documents you need

  • You can apply yourself or use an authorised representative. Authorisation can be recorded in the DGT register [Registro de apoderamientos] under «Solicitud de examen de permisos de conducir». For in-person representation, the signed «Otorgamiento de representación» form also works, stating that representation is free of charge. Give both people’s ID numbers when booking.
  • Prepare the application form. Signing declares that a court has not removed your right to drive, your licence is not under administrative suspension or intervention, and you do not hold another licence of the same class issued by another State.
  • Include the psychophysical aptitude report [informe de aptitud psicofísica] from an authorised driver assessment centre [Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores]. It is valid for 90 days.
  • Bring the payment receipt or a payment card if paying at the office. Since 06/11/2024, you need not resubmit the photograph or photo slip [talón-foto] where the DGT already holds them.

DGT: applicants and documents

How to apply: in person or online

In person, visit any Traffic Office [Jefatura u Oficina de Tráfico] with an appointment [cita previa], booked online or on 060. Bring original, valid ID: DNI or passport. EU nationals can use residence authorisation, their national ID, or a passport together with the registration certificate [Certificado de inscripción en el Registro Central de Extranjeros]. Non-EU nationals need valid residence authorisation. See our Traffic Office guide.

Online application steps

  1. Pay the fee

Pay through the DGT payment channels and download the payment receipt to attach to your application.

  2. Open the application

Sign in to the electronic register [Registro Electrónico] with DNI electrónico, a valid electronic certificate or Cl@ve and complete the application.

  3. Choose the recipient

Under «Organismo destinatario», select the Traffic Office [Jefatura u Oficina de Tráfico] receiving your application.

  4. Enter the subject

Write «Solicitud presentación pruebas de aptitud» followed by the applicant’s DNI number in the subject field [Asunto].

  5. Attach your documents

Use «Añadir documento» to upload the application form, aptitude report and payment receipt.

  6. Submit and keep the receipt

Submit the documents through the register and save the submission receipt.

Upload clear, good-quality scans. Register applications are not processed automatically and the DGT gives no assured processing deadline. The submission date counts; the DGT emails you when it processes the application. You are then notified of the exam date [citación].

What it costs and how many sittings it covers

After two failuresNew application and new fee

Failures count whether they occur in the same test or in different tests. Online, pay before submitting; at the office, pay by debit or credit card, never cash. Driving school costs are excluded. Other classes and special cases have different fees: check the DGT fee information.

How sittings are counted

If you cannot attend: cancelling the appointment

Missing the exam is recorded as NO APTO and uses up that sitting. In exceptional, justified cases of force majeure, you can request cancellation [anulación de citación] to preserve it. Apply free of charge to the office that processed the appointment. Provide the cancellation or transfer form, supporting evidence and identification: original DNI or passport in person, or DNI electrónico or an electronic certificate online. A private medical certificate is valid if signed by a doctor identified by full name and professional registration number. If you missed a sitting and had one left, no further payment is due; if it was the second, pay the fee again.

After passing the theory test

A pass is valid for two years from the day after you were declared to have passed. Moving city preserves the pass and psychophysical report, but you must request a file transfer [solicitud de traslado de expediente] at the Traffic Office in the province where you will take the test. You may take your first theory sitting up to three months before the minimum age for that class. A valid theory pass for another class exempts you from the common theory test.
