BDifficulty 2/5

After ensuring it is safe to approach an adult casualty after a crash, how should a non-medical first aider begin assessment?

Correct answer

Check for a response and, if absent, seek help and assess normal breathing.

Check whether they respond. If unresponsive, seek help and call 112 promptly, on speaker if possible, and assess whether breathing is normal while following instructions. If unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR and use an available AED following its prompts. Gasping is not normal breathing. Do not delay action trying to find a pulse; do not give drinks or transport the casualty yourself as the first step.
