An 11-metre lorry follows another vehicle without signalling an intention to overtake. In which situation must it leave at least 50 metres to help following vehicles overtake, in addition to enough distance to stop without a collision?

Correct answer

Outside a built-up area, with one lane each way, overtaking permitted and no congestion preventing it.

On a road outside a built-up area with one lane in each direction, where overtaking is permitted and traffic is not so congested that it prevents overtaking. Article 54 requires this minimum for vehicles over 10 metres in total length or with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg. This overtaking-assistance gap does not apply in built-up areas, where overtaking is prohibited, with more than one lane in the same direction, or when congestion prevents overtaking. Enough distance to stop without a collision is still required and may exceed 50 metres.
