C1Difficulty 3/5

If you are driving on a dual carriageway outside a built-up area, with two lanes for each direction of travel, what minimum separation must an 11-metre-long lorry maintain from the vehicle ahead that it does not intend to overtake?

Correct answer

The distance that allows me to stop without colliding with the vehicle in front in the event of sudden braking.

When a lorry over 10 metres in length is travelling behind another vehicle on a road outside a built-up area, and does NOT intend to overtake it, it must leave a gap that allows it to stop in the event of sudden braking, without colliding with the vehicle ahead, taking into account, in particular, the speed and the conditions of grip and braking (Art. 54.1).
