In a flooded lead-acid battery with vented caps, what are the vent openings for?

Correct answer

Allow gases produced inside to escape.

They let gases produced inside, especially during charging, escape and prevent dangerous accumulation. Do not block them with grease or dirt. They are not a means of correcting overfilling by spilling electrolyte. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep flames, sparks and smoking away from the battery; sealed batteries have a different construction and must not be opened for topping up.
