BDifficulty 2/5

In a manual-transmission car on snow, under conditions allowing a safe start, which technique helps reduce wheel spin?

Correct answer

Gently and, if suitable for the vehicle and gradient, in a higher gear than usual.

Set off very gently and, if the vehicle and gradient permit, in a higher gear than usual, often second, following the manufacturer’s instructions. A higher gear reduces torque multiplication at the wheels; this should not be confused with necessarily reducing engine power. It does not guarantee preventing all wheel spin or stop the vehicle sinking in deep snow by itself. If grip is inadequate or the road is closed, do not force progress.
