CDifficulty 3/5

A lorry will overtake a cyclist outside a built-up area on a road with one lane in each direction. What minimum lateral separation must it maintain, in addition to the other overtaking requirements?

Correct answer

At least 1.5 metres.

At least 1.5 metres, using part or all of the adjacent or opposing lane as applicable, without endangering or obstructing oncoming users. Outside a built-up area, reduce speed to at least 20 km/h below the road limit before and throughout the manoeuvre. If there were more than one lane per direction, a full lane change would be compulsory. Do not overtake unless all conditions can be met safely.
