It is called the tread pattern. Its grooves help evacuate water and maintain contact on wet roads, reducing aquaplaning risk. Effectiveness also depends on depth, condition, pressure, speed and the water present. They do not guarantee grip in every situation, nor does every smooth tyre always lose absolutely all wet-road grip.
