When overtaking a lorry on a two-wheeled motorcycle on a motorway outside a built-up area, what minimum lateral clearance must you leave from its outermost parts?

Correct answer

At least 1.50 metres.

At least 1.50 metres under article 85.5 for two-wheeled vehicles overtaking outside built-up areas. Also maintain the clearance and conditions needed to complete the manoeuvre safely. This is not a maximum or cancelled by the lorry’s size or speed. Do not assume clearance is always smaller in built-up areas: article 85.4’s 1.5 m minimum also applies there when overtaking its listed users.
