Carbon dioxide, CO₂. In complete combustion, carbon reacts with oxygen to form this gas. A real engine can also emit other combustion products and unburned fuel; this does not mean its exhaust contains only CO₂. Carbon dioxide must not be confused with carbon monoxide.
