BDifficulty 2/5

After passing through water you suspect the brakes are wet. In a safe place, following vehicle instructions, how should you check their effectiveness?

Correct answer

Apply the brake gently and safely to check response.

Use gentle, controlled braking without endangering or surprising following users. Moisture can temporarily reduce effectiveness; the DGT advises that gentle applications may help dry brakes, but if normal operation is not restored, stop safely and seek assistance. This does not itself increase tyre grip or justify abrupt braking. Do not enter a flooded section of unknown depth, and maintain recommended tyre pressures.
