It must be approved under UNECE Regulation R22, be suitable and be properly fastened, on both urban and interurban roads. Article 118 also requires protective gloves on interurban roads and closed footwear covering the whole foot on all roads. The protective-structure exemption also requires seat belts and a record in the ITV card or characteristics certificate; the belt must then be worn.
